Hallstatt: How to get there
The most convenient way to get to Hallstatt and explore the surrounding areas would be by car. Paid parking is available within walking distance of the little town’s center.
Alternatively, you can come to Hallstatt by train. ÖBB trains run frequently in the area, you just need to figure out your route from your departing destination. It can get a bit tricky because there aren’t always direct lines. However, the train stop you have to arrive at is called Hallstatt Bahnhof. Furthermore, after the train ride, you need to take a tiny boat across Halstätter Lake to get to Hallstatt, and it is a lovely experience!
An important tip: if you’re traveling by train, spending a whole day in Hallstatt can be a bit too long, especially if it’s cold outside. Most restaurants, cafes, and shops have short opening hours and the town is quite small. You won’t need more than 4-5 hours to see all there is to see, grab something to eat, and take your photos. Keep that in mind when booking the train tickets. Maybe allow more time if you’re going to take a hike or book tickets for the cable car.

Why is Hallstatt so popular? Well, I guess you can tell from the photos that this place looks wonderful. In fact, it is so beloved that there is a replica of Hallstatt in China, a town meant to look very much alike.
Anyways, people come here for the spectacular view, the lakes and mountains that surround it. There is a cable car service you can use to see Hallstatt and the area from above. You can find all the information on their website.

Hallstatt: Staying on a low budget
Austria can be expensive, especially when it comes to food. If you’re spending a day in Hallstatt and are on a tight budget, what we recommend is getting something to eat at the little outside-restaurant near the boat station. Food is reasonably priced, it tastes good and they even have Schnitzel. Besides, they have outside warmers, so it’s perfect even for the winter season. It’s also a great place to meet other travelers while waiting for the boat.
There are also a few restaurants and cafes where you can have a warm drink, with a view of the lake, which is a great thing to do to experience Hallstatt in all its coziness.
Finally, if you come here in the winter season, make sure to have warm clothes and comfortable shoes. If you enjoy hiking, you can wander into the woods for a little bit. It gives you a great chance to see the lake from above and to warm up as well. Keep in mind that the town is hilly, with some narrow and steep streets, so it’s best to be prepared.
